The University has a Charter and statutes
that define its structure, policies and procedures. The
main components of its organisational structure are: The
Council, The Chancellor, The Vice Chancellor, The Senate,
Department Deans, and The Registrar.
The Council
The Council is the governing body of the
University. It consists of representatives of the university’s
constituency and staff. It has at present 15 members.
It is principle legislative authority responsible for
making policy, and amending the university’s rules
and regulations. It appoints the chancellor, the pro-chancellor
(for specific roles), the vice-chancellor, and the principal
officers of the university. It approves all the awards,
degrees as well diplomas, conferred by the university,
and is responsible for ensuring the proper management
of the university and its financial health.
The Chancellor
The Chancellor is an eminent individual
appointed by the Council as its chairperson and the constitutional
head of the University. The Chancellor is responsible
for chairing Council meetings, providing leadership and
support for the day-to-day work of the Vice-Chancellor.
He has also ceremonial duties representing the university
in the local community and conferring degrees on occasions.
The Vice-Chancellor
The Vice-Chancellor is executive head of
the University and is its principal academic and administrative
officer. He or she is appointed by the Council and is
responsible for the day to day work of the university
in relation to the fulfilment of the university’s
mission and the policies and strategies established by
the Council.
The Registrar
The Registrar is the head of the university
administration under the Vice-Chancellor, and is responsible
through the Registrary, the conduct of examinations and
the maintenance of student records.
The Senate
The Senate consists of the Vice Chancellor,
Departments Deans and senior staff. It is also represented
by student body. It is responsible for the academic work
of the University. Its role is to advise and recommend
to the Council the initiation, organisation or discontinuation
of departments, centres, programs and awards, and to ensure
a high standard of teaching, research, and conduct in
the University.
The Department Board
Each Department has a Board consisting mainly
of senior staff. It is responsible for the development
and proper functioning of the Department, and advices
the Senate on matters of concern to the Department.
Deans
For administrative purposes, each
Department has a Head or a Dean, who is a senior teaching
staff, responsible to the Vice-Chancellor. He or she is
in charge of the management and performance of the Department
with the support of the Department Board. .
